Habitat / Home / Areal

It grows wild in Eastern Europe and Asia Minor, from Serbia and Albania all the way to Turkey.

Botanical description

Habitus: evergreen shrub or small tree from the rose family (Rosaceae). Most of them grow up to 5 meters, although there are also much larger specimens. The bark is grey-brown.

Flower: white, they are on a stalk 0.5-1 cm long, collected in clusters up to 15 cm long. They bloom in April and May for about 20 days.

Leaf: spirally arranged, oblong, round or wedge-shaped at the base, pointed tip, dark green on the face, leathery and shiny, the reverse side is lighter.

Growth conditions / Cultivation / Care

It is an adaptable species and suits both sunny and shady places, and as it tolerates environmental pollution well, it is suitable for the city environment. It is resistant to frost, suitable for planting and as protection against gusts of wind.

Use / Function and landscape

It is often planted as an ornamental shrub, individually or in groups or as a dense hedge in yards and parks. It tolerates pruning very well and can be pruned into the desired shape. When cut to the base, it quickly produces new shoots from the stump.

Special use

All parts of the plant are poisonous, they contain amygdalin which breaks down into hydrocyanic acid, especially the berry seeds.

Reproduction

It is propagated by seeds, root shoots, layers, cuttings and grafting.
