Widespread in temperate warm areas of Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Botanical description

Habitus: medium shrub up to 5 m tall. It has twisted shoots. 

Leaf: Leaves are twisted and broadly ovate with a serrated leaf margin, alternately arranged.

Flower: Flowers are unisexual and monoecious, the anthers form pendulous yellow catkins, the pistillate flowers are tiny, with a conspicuous red furrow on which the wind brings the pollen.

Fruit: The fruit is a nut.

Growth conditions / Cultivation / Care

Broadly resistant shrubs that thrive in ordinary garden soil. A modest species that thrives in sun and shade. No pruning is required, rejuvenate by cutting out the old shoots from the very centre of the bush, then sprout young shoots.
