Habitus: The root system is well developed and adapts to the depth of the soil. The trunk has a smooth, grey bark, becoming cracked and snake-like in age. Initially it has a columnar crown, then becomes ovate.

Leaf: Leaves ovate-oblong with a serrated leaf margin, golden yellow in autumn.

Flower: Male flowers are clustered in long catkins before leafing, female flowers are also in pendulous catkins up to 2 cm long.

Fruit: Fruits are flattened, to 10 mm large nuts, grey-brown with 7-11 longitudinal ribs. The nuts are held on a 3-4 cm long, three-truncate umbel. They ripen in October.
