Birches are trees of the colder regions of the northern hemisphere. Native to North America.

Botanical description

Habitus: The largest of the birches. Young birch trees brownish red, bark reddish at first, later pure white. Crown sparsely branched. 

Leaf: Leaves ovate, dark green, yellow in autumn.

Flower: Flower catkins before leafing.

Fruit: Fruit is a small nut.

Growth conditions / Cultivation / Care

It grows quickly on any soil. Requires a sunny location. The birch has shallow roots and pushes shrubs out of its neighbourhood.
