Habitat / Home / Areal

Native of Brazil, Peru and Argentina (S. America).

Botanical description

Habitus: It is a climber and creeper, forming long, leathery shoots that only cling to the ground for support.  They usually grow up to 5-12 metres high, even up to 15 metres. The branches are long and have spiny shoots. 

Leaf: Leaves are dark green, smooth, glossy and of various shapes. They are variable in shape and up to 10 cm long. The spines are located in between. 

Flower: The flowers are small white, surrounded by purple, red or pink bracts. It flowers from April to October.

Growth conditions / Cultivation / Care

Moderately demanding of soil moisture, it prefers strong sun.In winter, it is brought indoors where it sheds its leaves. If cut back, it will flower luxuriantly in spring.
