Widespread in the temperate warm climate of the northern hemisphere.

Botanical description

Habitus: It is a larger shrub with upright growth, with most branches growing vertically. The columnar variety grows slowly. Branch growth is partly crooked.

Leaf: Leaves simple, alternate, leaf margin incised or entire, green or reddish, deciduous.

Flower: Flowers simple or filled, single or in clusters, white and pink, pleasantly scented in spring before leafing out.

Fruit: Fleshy, nicely coloured, also edible. Matures in summer and autumn.

Growth conditions / Cultivation / Care

They thrive well in any garden soil, and are easy to grow. They are usually planted singly to give the flowers more prominence. Pruning is usually not necessary.
