Native to North America and Asia.

Botanical description

Habitus: grows into a tall tree in its native country, but stays smaller and lower here. It makes rapid growth when young and has poor quality wood. Trunk with thick, wrinkled bark, branches reddish brown with downy ribs.

Leaf: Leaves are palmate. They get their autumn colour early and keep it for a long time. They are yellow at first, then carmine red. 

Flower: The flowers are tiny, yellow-green, clustered in heads.

Fruit: Fruit in heads, urchin-shaped, pendulous.
