Habitat / Home / Areal

Native to eastern USA, Europe, the Caucasus and eastern Asia.

Botanical description

Habitus: It grows up to 40 m high, the bark on the trunk is grey, smooth even in old age. It has a narrow columnar or conical canopy.

Leaf: Leaves are a particularly delicate green in spring, tinged with yellow-brown in autumn. They have a smooth leaf margin, slightly hairy, wavy, green or red when budding.

Flower: Small catkins.

Fruit: The fruit is a beechnut, contained in a sheath.

Growth conditions / Cultivation / Care

They grow in fresh, deep soils containing at least some lime. They can tolerate strong sun as well as dense shade.
