It is native to the Mediterranean.

Botanical description

Habitus: Grows to 20-40 m high, bark dark grey to black. Branches grow in spindle arrangement and are slightly upward-pointing.

Leaf: Needles 2 together, 8-15 cm long, hard and sharpened, dark green.

Flower: Monoecious plant.

Fruit: Cone two to four together, sessile, ripens in the third year and soon falls off.

They thrive well in the worst soils and harsh climates. They take up a lot of space. They don’t tolerate waterlogged soils, shade and pollution.
